The sound of New York’s Gogol Bordello is a combination of reckless fervor, foot-stomping rhythms, outlandish lyrics and a circus of surreal stimuli that leaves progressive minded music fans spinning in the their wake. Drawing upon Gypsy, Slavic and punk-rock traditions, Gogol Bordello is the genesis of a new aesthetic that bridges the gap between Eastern European and Gypsy influence with Western culture. This new direction in music is singer/lyricist/visionary Eugene Hutz’s passion, who uses the term "Ukrainian Gypsy Punk Cabaret" to describe their singular sound. "The title of the new album sums of the spirit of the band and the people around it. Gogol Bordello is about creating new musical possibilities. We all come from a very distinct tradition of music that is largely driven by Eastern European sounds, visions and colors as well as punk rock and street culture. We’re a multicultural unit with an underdog energy and a sense of humor, although a pretty twisted one," says Hutz.

The Gogol Bordello live experience is a knock down drag out party where all matter of mayhem, on stage and off, is the order of the day. Singer Eugene Hutz also holds down a more restrained but no less fun DJ gig. Here he lets his music-obsessed self stretch beyond the Ukraine, gypsy and punk roots of his band into all manner of musics, ranging from Algerian rai to Jamaican dub to Indian bhangra to sampling and electronics. This same approach is applied to J.U.F. (which stands for "Jewish-Ukrainian Friendship"): everything is fair game for Hutz, keyboardist Tamir Muskat, saxophonist Ori Kaplan and guitarist Oren Kaplan (both also of Gogol Bordello), with a few guests helping as well. Never dragging as the beat scientists mix and match styles and ideas, the seamless 12-track album goes from song to song without pause. In the summer of 2004, on a car journey in Eastern Europe, Pavla Fleischer met and fell in love with Eugene Hutz, lead singer of New York's Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello. Captivated by his energy and his musical verve, and desperate to get to know him better, she decided to make a film about him. The Pied Piper of Hutzovina follows Eugene and Pavla on their subsequent road trip through Eugene's home country, Ukraine. It is the story of two people traveling together on two very different courses. Her aim is to rediscover a romance; his is to rediscover his roots. She hopes to find love on the road; he hopes to find musical inspiration from the gypsy culture he is determined to preserve. This is an intimate portrait of a filmaker with a passion for her subject, and a punk musician with a longing to revisit his past.
