Skipping Christmas

by John Grisham
Synopsis: This is a light, humorous story about a couple who decide to try to just "skip" Christmas for once. Luther and Nora Krank are spending their first Christmas with their daughter out of the house and, in fact, out of the country. Luther, an accountant, tallies up all of their Christmas expenses from the previous year and decides that they could save over $4000 if they just forego their usual Christmas activities. He convinces Nora they should use the money on a luxurious Caribbean cruise instead. So they enter into a pact... neither one will spend a cent on Christmas... but it turns out not to be as easy as it sounds!

This was a fun and easy book. Although the Kranks (and their friends and neighbors) seem to celebrate Christmas with a little more vigor than I can relate too, I have to admit this was an amusing story. I, for one, have many times wondered if the Christmas season hasn't gotten over commercialized and generally a little out of hand. The question is, does the spirit of the holiday get lost in all of the overzealous celebrating of it? Ultimately, "Skipping Christmas" shows us that the meaning of Christmas is not lost... not even on the Kranks. I got some good chuckles out of this book, especially near the end, and I think this story could be well adapted to the screen.

Skipping Christmas by John Grisham was a very good book. It was wonderful. Luther tried not to celebrate Christmas and it backfired on him. Sometimes being different can cause you to feel out of place. The Krankers also realized that being part of a community is not so bad. I highly recommend this book.
