The Book of Dead Birds follows the story of Ava Sing Lo, a 25 year old black Korean-American woman who has an unfortunate habit of killing her mother's beloved pet birds. She travels to the Salton Sea during the worst bird die off in American history to help with the rescue effort (hoping that she can in turn make some amends with her mother.) In the meanwhile, she is also working on writing the story of her mother's life in the hopes of coming to terms with her mother's past as a prostitute on a US military base in Korea. The novel is ultimately one of identity, migration and reconciliation. It covers some dark territory, but is filled with quirky humor, as well.

I read and loved this novel. It's brilliantly executed and evocative and the perfect choice for book clubs!

The Book of Dead Birds by Gayle Brandeis. Well this really is a book about dead birds, but it is not as bad as that sounds. The main character is a young woman who is the daughter of a Korean woman forced to work as a prostitute and an unknown African-America soldier. The title is unfortunate, it is a lot more hopeful and even darkly funny at times, and the main story is about the mother and the daughter overcoming an awful start in life.
