Ideas for an epic yarn like "Shogun"

I'm looking for a really big book to get stuck into, something like Shogun or Tai Pan, nothing too flowery.. tried a few stabs in the dark with no luck, any ideas?

I really enjoyed "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. It's not as big a book as Shogun, but it takes place in 12th century Europe, and centers around the conception and construction of a great Cathedral, and many of the lives that are directly and indirectly involved affected by it.

I thought it was a great book.
