My Father's Keeper - Fiction at it's very best

I just finished a fantastic debut novel by an immensely talented new author. My Father's Keeper is a powerful novel set on Gudalcanal during WWII. It is a profoundly moving tale about a father/son relationship. The pacing of the book is brilliant, pulling you in deeper and deeper as the story builds in intensity and suspense. I found the human drama riveting, the action compelling, and the message profound. I urge everyone to read this very special work of fiction.

The name of the author of My Father's Keeper is Kip Vander Hyde. I ordered it from Barnes and Noble, but I have also seen it on Amazon and Borders. It is a really great read.

I agree wholeheartedly!! This novel is a gem of historical fiction. I read it in 2 days because I just couldn't put it down. My book club selected it for their June read. We had our best discussion ever. We always rate the selections at the end of our meeting. This was the first book to receive a unanimous 5 star rating (5 out of 5) from our group. I think that anyone who enjoys fiction or history will enjoy this book immensely.

This was a really incredible read. I was reluctant to start it at first because I am not big on historical fiction. But, I picked it up at my brother's house and I was immediately drawn into the story. The characters are all so human, the emotion so real. I love books with characters who stay with you long after you have finished reading, books that make you think, books that challenge you to examine your own life. This book is immensely entertaining and so much more. It is my top book of the last few years.

This book is downright powerful. My husband and I have both read it and found it to be an absolutely brilliant work of fiction. I loved the characters, the gut-wrenching emotion, the human drama. My husband is an avid reader of nonfiction, but he was riveted by the story and also fascinated with the way the author interwove actual historical events with fiction. I have recommended this book to all my friends and their husbands! It is a real treat for anyone who loves to read.

Great book. I hope they make a movie out of it. I was totally engrossed from beginning to end. Does anyone know of any other books by this author?

I love this book!!! It speaks to you on so many different levels. There are so many layers to the story and it keeps you thinking about it long after you have finished the book. I keep mulling things over in my mind and I have new realizations about the message, the characters, even myself and my own life. I really enjoyed it from start to finish, and I miss being immersed in it. I am planning to read it again very soon.

This book has it all...a great story, compelling characters, action, emotion, drama, comedy. It is a true work of art. I am hoping for a sequel very soon. Does anyone else see Tom Hanks playing Jack in the movie version?

I don't want to ruin the end for anyone who hasn't read this, but I just have to say that it really blew me away. Didn't see that one coming. I really did enjoy this book right from the first page to the last. It seems destined for great things.

Re: My Father's Keeper - Fiction at it's very best

Great historical fiction, military fiction, general fiction -- just great fiction. This book has it all. Drama, comedy, suspense, heartbreak, reconcilliation, redemption. A true edge of your seat saga that will be enjoyed by anyone fortunate enough to pick it up. I, myself, am a history buff and rarely read fiction. I was given this for my birthday and I was so riveted right from the first page that I finished it in a day and a half. The story is fast-paced, the characters incredibly human, the historical setting excellently presented and researched. An exceptional novel.

Re: My Father's Keeper - Fiction at it's very best

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago based on what I read here. I agree with all of your reviews wholeheartedly. The story was very entertaining and at the same time gave me pause to consider my own relationship with my father. Thankfully, I don't have to go back in time to visit with him, and I am certainly going to appreciate the time I have with him more now. It is a special thing to find a book that is so much fun to read and at the same time makes you re-evaluate your own relationships. I will be thinking about Jack and Tom Macmillian for a long time to come.
