If the filesystem is dirty, you shall have to make it clean before you can mount it. You may be prompted to fix problems :(

I would try this:

Boot to single user mode as presicribed above, then run a filesystem check and mount the partitions, like so:

/sbin/fsck -p
/sbin/mount -a

Next, follow the instructions for setting the password.
