You are so right. I decided to look at open systems because everyone said they are so geat. Bah humbug. I have been through three MS operating systems and it has never taken me longer than an hour to get on the internet and that was with the first one. I have spent the whole day looking at books and google, changing command line options and I am not there yet.

"I can go anywhere on any Windows PC and get connected to the internet."
That is the total problem today. You (AND ANYTHING ELSE) can go anywhere on a Windows machine and connect to the internet. 95 percent of the spam and junk that is bothering my open system is coming from the PCs with the totally nonsecure OS that you are raving about.
Congress has to get off their duff and pass the "Insecure Client Prohibition Act No. SN3349-34.acd" that will prohibit any nonsecure OS from being connected to the Internet until a bond is posted and the owner is licensed. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen till next year.

Krff,
You are going off on a tangent! Be objective and stick to the point. The most important applications on a PC today is related to the internet. Therefore, it is obvious that access to the internet is paramount. I have been using Windows for many years. I will never swear by it reliability because it is not reliable! Mr. Bill G never saw the importance of reliability and never made reliability or security top issues. He is a features man. His main objectives is killing competition and getting his products into the hands of every human on earth. Working in computer support, I can never look back at my workplace on a Friday evening and say, this week went without a hitch. I have only experienced bullet proof reliability in the UNIX environment. However, one must observe that although Windows is not reliable, it usability is superior to LINUX and is configuration is approachable. I dabble in LINUX about once every year to see its progress. The KPPP issue of having to use the root password has been around YEARS and there is NO definite solution. Try this, try that, try the other …. Who has time to do that? I am not a prisoner. It is a modem, software and an ISP. It is 2004. I think by this, the issue of connecting a PC to the internet should be simple and rudimentary. Lets be objective, KDE and GNOME are surely glitzing up LINUX. But what is the purpose if you cannot connect a PC to the internet? LINUX is making progress at the system level and will probably always lead Window at that level. But at the rate you are going at the usability level, you NOT seeing primetime this decade!
