I have recently editted my rc.conf in my /etc/ directory to include this line:
ifconfig_xl0="media 10BaseT/UTP mtu 1492"
I had noticed that my autoselect was every now and then causing it to kick. My DSL modem needs to connect to a 10BaseT connection not a 100 BaseT connection. That line makes sure at startup that it stays a 10 BaseT connection. If you don't want to reboot you can type the same line at a command prompt. Just make sure you have added it to your rc.conf so the next time you do have to reboot. You don't have to remember to type it in again.
