| You have probably already found the answer to your question, but just in case :
To check current status of compression:
mt -f /dev/st0 datcompression
To turn on compression:
mt -f /dev/st0 datcompression [2..9]
NOTE: After datcompression, you must type in a number greater than 1, the number specifies the quantity of compression.
